VoIP is an acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol and provides telephone service over the Internet. If you have a reasonable quality high speed Internet connection you can get phone service delivered through your Internet connection instead of the traditional "plain old telephone service", or POTS, as provided by your local phone company.

Some people use VoIP in addition to their traditional phone service, because, although VoIP service providers usually offer lower rates than traditional phone companies, they do not always, phone directory listings, 411 service, or many of the other common phone services, e.g., call display. While many VoIP providers offer these services, consistent industry-wide means of offering these are still developing.

aserty  provides most of these services [ i ]

Indeed aserty offers very low long distance rates through their VoIP offering; e.g., 3¢ per minute to most western European countries.

VoIP is excellent as a "kids phone" as it can allow each child to have their "own" personal phone and phone number! This has the added benefit of freeing up your traditional POTS phone.

How does VoIP work?

Because the Internet is a digital service a method for turning the analog phone signals into digital signals that can be sent over the Internet is required. This function can either be included into the phone itself (special digital IP Phones) or through a device such as an Analogue Telephone Adaptor, or ATA, which allows a conventional — and less expensive — analog telephone to be attached to a digital service such as VoIP.

VoIP connecting directly

It is also possible to bypass a VoIP Service Provider and directly connect to another VoIP user. However, if the VoIP devices are behind Network Address Translation, or NAT, routers, there may be problems with this approach.

IP Phone ··· Ethernet ··· Router ··· Internet ··· Router ··· Ethernet ··· IP Phone

Why use VoIP?

There are two major reasons to use VoIP:

  • Lower Cost
  • Increased functionality
Lower Cost

In general phone service via VoIP costs less than equivalent service from traditional sources. This is largely a function of traditional phone services either being monopolies or government entities. There are also some cost savings due to using a single network to carry voice and data. This is especially true when users have existing under-utilized network capacity that they can use for VoIP without any additional costs.

Increased Functionality

VoIP makes easy some things that are difficult to impossible with traditional phone networks.

  • Incoming phone calls are automatically routed to your VoIP phone where ever you plug it into the network. Take your VoIP phone with you on a trip, and anywhere you connect it to the Internet, you can receive your incoming calls.
  • Call center agents using VoIP phones can easily work from anywhere with a good Internet connection.

The Student plan is intended to provide reduced cost access throughout the typical collage or university academic year, September through April, without incurring the inconvenience, monthly charges, and, possible, reconnect charges.

Your e-mail remains active and can be accessed through our Web interface and any Web browser application; e.g., Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, etc.

The Snowbird plan is intended for those who spend protracted periods outside the country (typically the Winter months).

Like the Student Plan, this plan avoids the inconvenience and costs of having an Internet service while you are unable to use it. Your e-mail account remains active and accessible.

This service requires a commitment of at least six consecutive months of service.

If you are new to the Internet we suggest that you subscribe to this plan and gauge your usage before opting for one of the other plans.

Minutes are accumulated throughout the month and billed by the hour. You are responsibile for monitoring your usage — there are no refunds.

You may upgrade to the Unlimited plan at any time.

This plan does not include storage for private Web pages.

ISDN is essentially a "dial" service.

In addition to our access fee charges there may be connect and monthly fees charged by your telephone service provider. You must contact your telephone service provider to arrange to have your telephone service adapted for ISDN.

Your conventional analog modem is not suitable for ISDN; an ISDN specific modem is required. We do not supply ISDN modems.

If you wish a more distinctive e-mail name you may supply it here. Like the Client ID, the PEN may consist of up to twenty-six(26) alphabetics (A-Z), numerics (0-9) and, additionally, the period, ".", and the underscore, "_", characters. E.g.

(The PEN is often used to retain the e-mail name of a former supplier of e-mail services in order to provide name continuity. Like the Client ID your PEN is case insensitive.)

Each mail box can have address of the form,

ADSL/FTTN Service Information

Click the "Copy from..." radio button to copy this information from your Contact and Billing Information.

If the telephone number where ADSL/FTTN is to be connected differs from that given in your Contact Information supply that number here. Also, the service details must match exactly the account information for this telephone number as held by your telephone service supplier — typically found on your monthly statement.

Make corrections as necessary as inaccurate information will delay the installation of your ADSL service.

It may take up to 5 working days to complete the activation of your ADSL service.

Please be aware that HyperSpeed ADSL/FTTN service may not be available in all telephone service areas.

Unlike traditional Dial-up service, ADSL is location specific; that is, you can only access Internet services from the location and telephone service to which ADSL is attached.

The "Ancillary Dial Augmented Service" will allow Internet access when away from the ADSL location, e.g., the cottage, through a standard dial-up modem connection.

Minutes are accumulated throughout the month and billed by the hour. You are responsibile for monitoring your usage — there are no refunds.

Your conventional analog modem — typically labeled "56K V9.2 Modem" — is not suitable for use with ADSL/FTTN; an ADSL or FTTN modem is required. Any ADSL or FTTN style modem that meets the G.992.1(G.dmt) or G.992.2(G.Lite) specification is suitable.

You may supply your own compliant ADSL or FTTN modem or you may purchase a suitable modem from aserty. Be aware that these modems are not usually stocked by your local electronics store.

An ATA (Analog Telephone Adapter) is required to access the aserty telephone service from a conventional telephone.

An ATA is not required if you are using a softphone product from your computer only.

You may purchase an ATA from aserty at competitive price.

Password (required)

Your password is case SeNsItIvE and must be between 5 and 20 characters in length.

Your password is used to ensure the privacy of your e-mail and to restrict access to your Client ID. Choose your password wisely ensuring that it could not be easily guessed. Although there is much written about how you should "disguise" your password (e.g. making it long and obscure) we at aserty do not feel that a common word that is easily remembered is any less secure than a string of randomly chosen characters and numbers. What\'s a word anyway but a randomly chosen series of grunts and squeaks!

Also, be aware that aserty does not keep a record of your password. If you forget it you will have to contact aserty Support (see our Contact page) to have a new password assigned . Guard your Client ID and password well! You are ultimately responsible for ALL usage against your Client ID regardless as to who incurred that usage. You may not share your Client ID; this is a violation of our Terms of Service.

Client ID (required)

The Client ID is what is commonly referred to as your "User ID" or "Logon ID". Although it may be any string of alphabetic (A-Z) and numeric (0-9) characters with a length of from 6 to 20 characters, may we suggest that you use some part of your real name as your Client ID.

E.g. suppose your name is Fred Flintstone, you could choose:

The use of upper and lower case in the examples is for readability only, the Client ID is case insensitive: i.e. FFlintstone is the same as FFLINTSTONE, or fflintstone, or FfLiNtStOnE. Guard your Client ID and password well! You are ultimately responsible for ALL usage against your Client ID regardless as to who incurred that usage. You may not share your Client ID; this is a violation of our Terms of Service.

ATA: Analogue Telephone Adaptor

Connects an Analogue Telephone to a VOIP network.
Usually has an Ethernet jack, and an RJ-11 phone jack.

Sometimes referred to as Media Gateways, VOIP Gateways, TA (Telephone Adaptor), FXS Adaptor, etc. Some ATA's are locked to a particular provider, and useless with any other. Virtually all ATA's use either the SIP or IAX industry standard protocol.

Media Gateways

Media gateways, also commonly referred to as VoIP gateways, are devices which bridge conventional telephone networks and equipment to VoIP telephone networks. A typical media gateway has at least one conventional telephone port and at least one ethernet port.
